Seemingly minor in nature, food allergies can actually have an enormously negative impact on allergy sufferers’ quality of life. In some cases, they can even be fatal. DBV-Technologies has invested considerable effort into developing a food allergy treatment that will be effective, pain-free in its administration and above all, safe.

Electrospray technology is key to producing Viaskin milk patches

The end result of this French company’s research is the Viaskin® patch. This seemingly simple patch is actually a very technologically-advanced solution incorporating a number of clever innovations. Key to its operation are the electrosprays (illustrated below), which are used to coat an adhesive patch with an extremely even layer of proteins (the appropriate allergens). These electrically-charged proteins are sprayed in liquid form and upon drying, they retain their electrical charge. This helps the protein layer to stick to the backing of the patch. The patch is then able to deliver the antigens in soluble form to the Langerhans cells rather than directly into the bloodstream – a far safer approach. Patches have so far been produced in house dust mite, peanut and cow’s milk protein allergy forms.
